Few places in the world leave you speechless at first sight – but Lokrum, a small Croatian island off the coast of Dubrovnik, certainly belongs to them. Whether it's the enchanting landscape, the historical fascination, or the promise of a hidden curse, when you discover Lokrum, you'll likely want to return again and again.
Lokrum, approximately 1,600 meters long and 540 meters wide, has been under protection for decades. As early as 1964, the island was first designated as a nature reserve, and in 1976 it was declared a special forest vegetation reserve under the protection of UNESCO. The untouched nature and carefully preserved flora make Lokrum an important green space in the region.
The gardening history of the island dates back to the 11th century when Benedictine monks began cultivating the land. Today, you can discover the following on Lokrum:
This lush diversity has rightfully earned Lokrum the nickname "green oasis of Dubrovnik."
Lokrum offers you kilometers of winding paths, perfect for walks under the canopy of ancient cypresses and pines. Along the way, you will:
If you need a break, you can enjoy local specialties at one of the island's restaurants. The restaurants are cozily nestled in the shady greenery of the fir trees.
If you are a fan of the HBO series "Game of Thrones," you will recognize Lokrum as one of the filming locations. The rugged coastal landscape, dense forests, and medieval ambiance provided the perfect backdrop for unforgettable scenes from the series.
The beauty of Lokrum is enough to inspire admiration. However, the island's reputation has been equally shaped by its legends and myths. Over the centuries, storytellers have spoken of curses, tragic fates, and mysterious events.
According to one legend, the English King Richard the Lionheart found refuge on Lokrum in 1192. During a violent storm at sea, his ship was in danger of sinking, but he and his crew managed to land safely on Lokrum. In gratitude, Richard vowed to build a church on the island. Ultimately, however, he financed the construction of a church in Dubrovnik, fulfilling his promise only partially.
In the year 1023, Dubrovnik was threatened by a massive fire. The frightened citizens prayed to Saint Benedict and promised to build a monastery if he spared their city. The flames miraculously extinguished, and the inhabitants fulfilled their vow by erecting a Benedictine monastery and a church on Lokrum. The "black Benedictines," so called because of their dark robes, lived peacefully on the island for centuries.
In the 18th century, Lokrum came into private ownership, and the monastery was dissolved. Horrified, the Benedictines held a last mass on the night before their departure. Clad in hooded cloaks and holding inverted burning candles, they circled the island three times, letting hot wax drip onto the ground. During this solemn ritual, they uttered a grim warning:
Cursed be he who acquires Lokrum for his own purposes.
Shortly after the expulsion of the Benedictines, three nobles who had proposed the closure of the monastery are said to have met tragic ends:
The family of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I also suffered misfortune after acquiring Lokrum. The emperor's younger brother, Archduke Maximilian, bought the island in the 19th century with the dream of establishing a luxurious summer residence there. But shortly thereafter, he was appointed Emperor of Mexico—only to be betrayed by his closest confidants. Ultimately, he was executed by a firing squad. His wife, Archduchess Charlotte, who had spent time on Lokrum, suffered a complete nervous breakdown.
Lokrum remains a place of impressive beauty and timeless mystery. Whether the legends are true or not, you must leave the island by 9 PM – which piques curiosity and stimulates the imagination. Is it a precaution against the ancient curse – or simply a measure to preserve Lokrum's natural wonders?
