Discover Zadar Attractions

January 14, 2022

The Croatian coastal city of Zadar is extremely popular with tourists. This is partly due to the numerous Zadar attractions. Some of them are man-made, while others are among the most fascinating natural wonders in the world. In this article, we explain what you absolutely must see in Zadar and what makes each of the Zadar attractions special.

Zadar's Sights: The Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun

Two of Zadar's most impressive sights come from the artist Nicola Basic. The first of these is the so-called Sea Organ. This is an artistic musical instrument played by the waves. For this purpose, various tubes of different lengths and sizes were installed below sea level. These are equipped with individual organ pipes. When the sea pushes water into the pipes, a sound is produced. The different sounds of the various tubes create a concert played by Mother Nature herself.

Equally impressive is the so-called Greeting to the Sun. This is a light artwork powered by solar energy. During the day, sunlight is collected, converted into energy, and stored. After sunset, the energy is used for a fascinating light show that locals and visitors from all over the world marvel at. Many come to the promenade to listen to the concert and watch the light spectacle.

Zadar's Sights: The Cathedral of St. Anastasia

The Cathedral of St. Anastasia is one of Zadar's sights due to its sheer size alone. It is the largest church in Dalmatia, boasting architectural peculiarities. The cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and can be visited from the inside. It is prominently visible and thus a central point of interest in Zadar's old town.

Those who view the cathedral from the inside are initially impressed by its architecture. Additionally, there is an archaeological museum inside, featuring many attractive exhibits. Another highlight of the building is the bell tower, which stands at an impressive 54 meters and offers a beautiful view over Zadar.

These are the features of the Cathedral of St. Anastasia:

  • 54 m high bell tower
  • Archaeological museum
  • Fascinating architecture
  • Largest church in Dalmatia

Zadar's Sights: The Monastery of St. Francis

Another religious Zadar attraction is the Monastery of St. Francis. It was founded as early as the 13th century, setting a record: No church in Dalmatia is older. While the Cathedral of St. Anastasia embodies Tuscan romance, the Monastery of St. Francis stands for Gothic. Tourists are particularly drawn to the cloister of the monastery. Additionally, the building has its own library with numerous precious books.

Furthermore, art enthusiasts should not miss a visit to the monastery. Right next to the sacristy is the so-called treasury. This houses an art collection with many exhibits. Particularly well-known is a crucifix that was made 100 years before the monastery was founded. The unique atmosphere of the monastery and its unique exhibits make a visit to this Zadar attraction so worthwhile.

Zadar's Attractions: The Riva Promenade

The Riva Promenade is beautiful and invites you to take extensive walks. Both locals and visitors to the city love to visit this Zadar attraction to enjoy the unique nature and proximity to the sea. During the day, the steps along the promenade invite you to sunbathe, and at sunset, you will find romantically inclined people and couples here. It is said that the Riva Promenade offers the most beautiful sunsets in Croatia.

At various points along the promenade, there are opportunities to access piers or go swimming in the sea. From here, you can admire various islands that are only a short distance from the mainland. Not far from the promenade, there are various dining options, so your culinary needs are also well taken care of. In particular, Zadar's ice cream has an excellent reputation.

Zadar's Sights: The People's Square – the Center of Urban Life

The center of Zadar is occupied by the so-called People's Square. People have always gathered here to interact and exchange with each other. To this day, the People's Square remains the social center of the city, and both residents and guests can be found here in large numbers.

The People's Square boasts many cafés, but also Zadar's sights such as the Loggia and the pink bell tower can be found here. Many guests also come here to see the so-called Ghirardini Palace. Especially for the view from the balcony, a visit to Zadar is worthwhile.
