Sockets in Croatia – Do I Need an Adapter?

Finally, it's vacation time and the anticipation is high. The suitcases are packed and you're almost ready to go. Most people don't want to do without their smartphone, camera, or tablet on vacation. After all, you want to share your holiday experiences with friends and family. But do the home plugs also fit into the sockets of the holiday destination? Croatia is a frequently chosen holiday destination for Germans and a real insider tip for any Mediterranean vacationer.

If you are traveling to Croatia for the first time, you are probably wondering: Are my devices compatible with Croatian sockets or are there special sockets in Croatia? And do I need a special adapter for the sockets in Croatia? We at Crovillas will tell you.

Plug Types and Sockets in Croatia

In the beautiful Balkan country, two different plug types are used for sockets in Croatia. The most common plug type in Croatia is Type F, but Type C plugs are also frequently used. In Germany, Type C and F sockets are also used. Therefore, in most cases, you can use German plugs for Croatian sockets without any problems. You do not need a special travel adapter for your family vacation in Croatia. You also do not need to worry about encountering old sockets in Croatia that are not compatible with your electrical devices. The sockets in Croatia comply with the European standard. Therefore, you do not need to take any further precautions regarding plugs and sockets in Croatia.

Sockets in other countries

In many other countries, the same sockets as in Croatia are also used. These include, among others, the European countries Greece, Turkey, Ukraine, Spain, and Portugal. But also Russia, Iran, the Baltic states, and most Scandinavian countries use the same plug types and the same mains voltage. In South Africa, South America, parts of Asia, and the United Kingdom, however, different sockets and voltages are used compared to Croatia. In the USA, Canada, and Australia, there are also special sockets and plug types, for which an adapter is necessary for German devices. If you come from another country or are planning a vacation destination outside of Europe, you should therefore check whether and which travel adapter you need.

Sockets in Croatia - What voltage and frequency are used?

The voltage for sockets in Croatia is 230 volts, with a frequency of 50 Hz. You will find these exact values in Germany as well. Therefore, if you are traveling from Germany to Croatia, you do not need a travel adapter or a voltage converter for the sockets in Croatia. You can plug your digital devices into Croatian sockets as usual; this applies to all devices that you can also connect in Germany.

Plug Type C for small devices

As already mentioned, plug types C and F are used in Croatia. We will explain the differences between the two types. Plug type C is one of the European standard plugs and is therefore also known as the Euro plug. Besides Europe, it is also used in parts of Asia and South America. Plug type C has a voltage of 230 volts and is designed for currents up to 2.5 amperes. These are two-pin plugs and sockets that do not have a grounding contact. Type C plugs are mainly used for small devices that consume little power. These include, for example, charging cables for smartphones. Incidentally, type E and type F plugs fit into the same socket as type C.

Plug Type F with grounding contact

Plug type F is the second standard plug used for sockets in Croatia and Germany, as well as in many other European countries. This plug is also known as a grounding contact plug (Schuko). The grounding contact plug is designed for voltages from 220 to a maximum of 250 volts and for currents up to 16 amperes. What is special about this plug and what distinguishes it from type C? The difference from type C is that type F has grounding contacts. Plug type F is intended to dissipate dangerous voltages in advance. It is used for devices equipped with the highest safety level (protection class 1). These include, for example, kettles and irons. Type E and C plugs also fit into type F sockets.
