The International Airports of the Coastal Region

The majority of the international airports of the beautiful country are located on its coast. Here you will also find the popular tourist regions of Istria, Kvarner Bay, and Dalmatia.

The peninsula of Istria, known for its high-quality wine, is most easily reached via the airport of the city of Pula. It is located about 6 km east of the city center. Visitors to Istria also have the option of using the Italian airport of Trieste.

Rijeka is the central location of the particularly sunny holiday region of Kvarner Bay. The city's international airport is located about 16 km outside on the well-known holiday island of Krk. Two impressive arch bridges connect Rijeka with the island. The route to the airport runs via the A7 motorway and the national road 102. Those who want to visit the eastern part of Istria can also travel via Rijeka.

Visitors to the region of Dalmatia, known as the coast of 1000 islands, can choose between 3 international airports.

You can reach Northern Dalmatia most quickly via the airport of the city of Zadar. To get to Central Dalmatia, it is best to use the airport of Split. It is the second-largest city in Croatia with a well-developed airport. This is located about 20 km west of the city in close proximity to the beautiful coast of Dalmatia. In the far south of Dalmatia lies the airport of Dubrovnik. The national road 8 connects the city with its airport, which is 15 km southeast.

Those who want to get to know some of the many islands of the coastal region may wonder how to reach other islands besides Krk by plane. There is an airport on the island of Losinj, which belongs to Kvarner Bay. Although it only has regional significance, it is served from Germany in the summer. There are no bridges from Losinj to the mainland, only ferries. There is also a regional airport on the island of Brac, which belongs to Dalmatia, near the town of Bol. This is also served from abroad in the summer, but currently not from German airports. However, you can reach Brac via a stopover at Croatia's international airports. There are also only ferry connections from Brac to the mainland.

Airports Outside the Coastal Region

Do you want to visit the Medvednica mountain range in winter to spend your ski holiday there? Do you want to get to know the Plitvice Lakes in summer? Then you should use the international airport of the Croatian capital Zagreb. This is considered a hub of national air traffic. Therefore, it can also be useful to reach your holiday destination via a stopover in Zagreb if you do not find an optimal connection from Germany to other Croatian airports. Far away from the coast in the northeast of Croatia, the city of Osijek offers an international airport. The place is about 250 km east of Zagreb and offers numerous historical and cultural sights.

General Information on Holiday Travel via Croatia's Airports

Flights to Croatia are offered from all major international airports in Germany such as Frankfurt / Main, Hamburg, Cologne / Bonn, Stuttgart, Munich, Berlin–Tegel, and others. The airline Croatia Airlines and numerous German and European companies carry out these flights. In summer, it is no problem to reach Croatia's international airports from Germany. In the cold season, there are good flight connections only to Zagreb. Split and Dubrovnik are occasionally also served. A flight to Croatia has the clear advantage that you reach your destination quickly and without traffic jams. However, it also means that you are traveling without your own car. After your landing, the question arises as to which means of transport you want to use during your holiday. Here are some tips: There are bus connections from all Croatian airports to the cities to which they belong. The bus schedules are usually adapted to the departures and arrivals of the planes. From the central bus stations of the places with airports, you can continue your journey with other bus lines or other means of transport to your holiday home or other accommodation. Those who want to be independent of public transport can rent a rental car at all airports at reasonable prices. Especially in the high season in summer, it is advisable to book a car online or in a travel agency before the holiday. If you want to visit a sight that is a good distance from your holiday destination, you naturally have the option of using the plane within Croatia. For example, as a holidaymaker in Istria, you can visit the Croatian capital Zagreb in one day.
